Our Story
Soap rooted in the prairie. Made for the people you love.
I grew up with the prairie in my bones.
There's something about a South Dakota sky that gets into you when you're young. The way it goes on forever. The way the grass moves in the wind like its breathing. The way a summer storm can roll in from the west and change everything in twenty minutes.
I didn't grow up thinking I'd be making soap someday. But I grew up knowing — in the way you know things you can't quite explain — that this land matters. That it's worth something beyond what you can see. That it deserves to be here long after we are.
That knowing never left me. It's why Prairie Lather exists.
The prairie isn't just pretty. It's essential.
Prairie ecosystems are some of the most threatened habitats on earth. The Great Plains have lost the vast majority of their native grasslands to development and agricultural conversion — and with them, the wildlife, the watersheds, and the wildflowers that have shaped this region for thousands of years.
Growing up here meant watching that change happen. It meant understanding, slowly, that loving a place isn't enough. That love has to become action.
When we built Prairie Lather, we built it around a simple belief: that a small, everyday purchase — a bar of soap — could be part of something bigger. That conservation doesn't have to be someone else's job.
Then I became a mom. And I started reading labels.
The ingredient side of Prairie Lather grew from a different kind of love — the kind that makes you start turning over every bottle in the shower and wondering what you've been putting on your family's skin.
I wanted soap that was simple. That I could read the label of without needing a chemistry degree. That I felt genuinely good about handing to my kids.
So we made it.
Every ingredient we choose goes through one lens: would I be comfortable using this on my family, every day, for years? If the answer isn't a clear yes, it doesn't belong in our bars. Not because we're chasing a certification — but because that's the standard we'd want from anyone making something we put on our bodies.
Safety, simplicity, transparency. That's it. That's the whole philosophy.
How We Show Up
|
We Minimize WasteFrom the way we package our bars to the way we run production, we're always asking: is there less? We use minimal, compostable packaging and make deliberate choices to keep our footprint small — because the land we're trying to protect starts right here, in how we operate. |
🧪 We Choose Ingredients ThoughtfullyEvery ingredient in every bar is there because it earned its place. We prioritize safety, simplicity, and transparency — and we share that information openly. No fillers, no mystery. Just honest choices made with your family in mind. |
🌾 We Give Back to the LandA portion of every Prairie Lather purchase goes directly to land conservation. This isn't a one-time donation or a promotional campaign — it's a permanent part of how we do business. Because the land that inspires our work deserves our sustained commitment. |
You're part of this, too.
Every bar you buy from Prairie Lather is a vote for the prairie. For clean ingredients. For doing business in a way that gives back more than it takes.
We're not a big company. We're not trying to be. We're a small operation in South Dakota, making soap by hand, and sending a piece of every sale back to the land that made us.
We're glad you're here.
